Gaia 39 million stars - amazing #dataviz

Gaia has measured the position and brightness of nearly 1.7 billion stars across the sky, as seen in this image, as well as the parallax (an indicator of distance) and motion on the sky of 1.3 billion stars. Brighter regions indicate denser concentrations of stars, while darker regions correspond to patches of the sky where fewer stars are observed. These dark areas are often not devoid of stars: in many cases, clouds of gas and dust clouds intervening between us and more distant stars block their light and hide them from our view.
